The Community HUB interviews notable members of society on the issue of e-Waste
The Community HUB Corporation has launched its e-Waste Awareness Initiative 2012 branded e-Cycle. In this regard, the HUB has drawn eighteen students from Bishop’s Centenary College in Port-of-Spain and has engaged them in a 4-week digital film production workshop.
The workshop is geared toward creating a video artifact which will be aired on various media forms to alert the National and Regional population to the hazardous effects of electronic waste.
On August 3, 2012, as part of the short film, workshop participants interviewed the Minister of Science and Technology – Dr. the Honorable Rupert Griffith – at his office at the Waterfront Complex on Wrightson Road, Port-of-Spain.
Minister Griffith was presented with several challenging questions surrounding e-waste policy and legislation and he addressed the issues head on. He acknowledged that Government’s Laptop Initiative for SEA students introduces more than 17,000 laptops into the system each year, and he hinted at some measures that would be put in place to mitigate the potential environmental impact for these computers at the end of their useful lives.
Also interviewed on the subject was the Honourable Ramona Ramdial – Minister in the Ministry of Water and the Environment. Minister Ramdial commended the Community HUB and the students of Bishop’s Centenary College for embarking on this Initiative and related her Ministry’s own efforts to launch an awareness and education campaign to inform the local citizenry on the proper disposal and recycling of electronic waste.
Workshop participants have also gleaned perspectives from Illuminat, the Basil Convention Regional Office, e-waste consultants and medical professionals.
Columbus Communications Trinidad – Flow – is the proud sponsor of this initiative and the artefact will be aired on Flow’s cable networks.
The eCycle awards ceremony will be hosted on August 22, 2012 when the final video artefact will be unveiled.
